HAMILTON in the Content Maw

We foolishly peered down into the Great Internet Brain Iron's yawning content maw, and fresh from the vaults of the Haus of Maus came Lin-Manuel Miranda's transcendent American Broadway sensation--HAMILTON. Did we love it? Yes! Like it? Sure! Hate it? Kinda! Did we stare with mouths agape at the screen, utterly astonished by the culture-commandeering success of what is really just a best-case-scenario version of a seventh grade social studies project by the theater nerds? One of us certainly did!

While Lin-Manuel Miranda may have been cruelly denigrated by one-third of our podcast as a mere YouTube mashup-maker, no one on the show even rises anywhere near that level of musical talent nor inclination. Below you’ll find all the songs we played during this episode, including the Hamilton clips, and the wonderful creators whose work we borrowed in the important work of poking fun at Hamilton.

First, a correction. Abe’s brain squirted in an unfortunate way at the top of the episode, when he compared Lin-Manuel Miranda’s mournful hound-howl during “It’s Quiet Uptown” (and whenever else he tries to emote) to the voice of Beast from Beauty and the Beast. The comparison he was thinking of was Jason Segel’s voice in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, when he’s singing Dracula’s Lament, which is the exact right comparison. Apologies for not catching it during the show.

Next up we played a clip of this 2017 interview from Fresh Air. The relevant humiliating 45 seconds starts at about 18:18.

Here’s the “My Shot” / “Lose Yourself” mashup, from YouTuber Nib Oswald. This undeniably improves both songs.

A remix of Eminem's "Lose Yourself" with the instrumental of "My Shot" from Hamilton: An American Musical. Check out my channel for more parodies and raps.

Here’s Jonathan Groff’s show-stealing “You’ll Be Back,” followed by Lin-Manuel Miranda’s inspired cover of “You’ll Be Back”—which he called “You’re Welcome” and had The Rock sing and made it the centerpiece of Disney’s Moana.

The moment when Abe gave himself over to the show: George Washington doing his Hulk Hogan thing, stomping right into Abe’s heart forever.

And the moment that Bob was very much not able to give himself over to the show: Aaron Burr being utterly flummoxed by Hamilton’s ability to write a bunch of essays in six months.

And now for some mashups, the first from groboclone and the next from Bill McClintock.
